Acting as a field of study, like physics or chemistry, has a history of innovation and advancement. It has significant theorists and certainly renowned practitioners. In acting training, because of the deeply personal nature of the work, a student student studying with a particular teacher becomes part of a direct spoken lineage of instruction. This lineage can often be traced back to an individual teacher who redefined our understanding of the art and deeply influenced our mode of expression. The history of acting training is often overlooked or relegated to a sidebar. Highlighting this legacy can enhance a student’s sense of purpose in the training.
