Memorization Is a kinesthetic interaction with the text. The ability to repeat memorized lines must ultimately become physical memory for the actor like riding a bike, but it must not become route. This is a constant source of anguish for beginning acting students. It may be a matter of simply not allocating enough time to the task or, more likely, the lack of a systematic approach to the process. These articles offer a variety of strategies and also a way of looking at memorization which can help students discipline themselves and embrace this important part of creating a role.

“Theater is a physical activity as much as anything. It’s harder for me to learn the lines than it was 30 years ago. At the same time, I’ll never quit working in the theater – until I can’t memorize two lines back to back.”

-Brian Dennehy
